The Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought an intellectual centre of the global Islamic movement
Kalim Siddiqui Memorial Seminar London, May 7, 2000
The ICIT's second annual Kalim Siddiqui Memorial Seminar, jointly convened with the Crescent International newsmagazine, was held in London on May 7, 2000. The seminar, on "Muslims, the west and the contemporary Islamic movement", was held at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, and attended by more than 250 people.
The main paper, following recitation from the Holy Qur'an by Sister Rabia Sayed, a 13-year-old haafizah from South Africa, was given by Zafar Bangash, Director of the ICIT. His paper, on "The potential for an Islamic revolution in Pakistan", was well-received and generated a great deal of comment in the later panel discussion. Other papers were presented by Fuad Nahdi, editor of the London-based Muslim magazine Q-News, who spoke on "British Muslims, Britain and the Global Ummah", and Massoud Shadjareh, Chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commision, London, who spoke on the need for greater awareness among Muslims about the issue of human rights in Muslim countries.
The speeches were followed by a panel discussion chaired by Crescent editor Iqbal Siddiqui. Saeed Bahmanour of Cambridge University, Faiz al-Aqtab Siddiqui of Hijaz College and Dr Basheer Nafi of The Muslim College joined the speakers as panellists, and the allotted time of one hour proved far from adequate for the number of points that people wished to discuss.
Papers:

British Muslims, Britain and the global Ummah by Fuad Nahdi
